How A Flushable Colostomy Pouch Can Improve Quality Of Life
For many people with a colostomy, not being able to dispose of a used pouch easily and discreetly can often make them feel less confident, particularly in public.
Aura® Flushable is the latest flushable colostomy pouch range available on prescription. It combines unique flushable technology with the added comfort of medical grade Manuka honey, which may help to promote healthy skin around the stoma.
A group of Aura® Flushable users were recently interviewed as part of the new Freedom to Be campaign and each of them were able to share their first-hand experiences of using a flushable pouch and the positive impact that it has had on their confidence and quality of life.
Nancy lives in Marple near Stockport. She loves to be social and still plays a very active role in her local church community. Before discovering the Aura® Flushable colostomy pouch, Nancy would often find disposing of her used pouch a struggle. She even described a few occasions where she had been caught off-guard without access to a suitable bin and was left with no choice but to carry her used pouch home with her in her handbag.
“With the old pouches, if there wasn’t a bin where I was I’d have to put it in my handbag and take it home. No-one knew, only me, but with these (flushable pouches) I don’t have to do that. I didn’t like that part of it really, but if there weren’t any bins, that’s what I did.”
An important factor for Nancy in choosing Aura® Flushable was that it offered more discretion when away from home.
“Using flushable pouches really is the difference between struggling and not struggling. It makes life easier and less of a worry because you’re not thinking about putting it all in a bag and taking it with you. You know that you can just flush it in the loo, and honestly, it’s just easier and more comfortable. Having a pouch is not the easiest thing in the world, so anything that can be done to ease our journey through this episode in our lives has got to be good.”
Nancy continues to play a key part in her local church community and has also found social media especially useful for reaching out and socialising with other colostomates.
“Before I started using social media, I tended to feel like I was the only one with a stoma pouch, but once I got online I could see other people on there and I felt like part of something. Every time I see a letter or a post online, I think ‘oh yes, I’d love to help that person, I know what they’re going through’. You immediately empathise with them because you’ve been there, done that. You don’t need to feel alone.”
Since discovering Aura® Flushable, Nancy has now applied for her first passport to take advantage of her new found freedom and we’re all excited to see what the future holds for her.
