This quality standard covers the assessment care and treatment options for the management of urinary incontinence in women aged 18 years and over. It describes high quality care in priority areas for improvement, but does not cover urinary incontinence in women with neurological disease.
UPDATE: This particular guidance was updated in 2021 to align with similar standards for pelvic floor dysfunction, which can be a major contributing factor to urinary control in women.
Women may be examined by a healthcare professional and asked to keep a bladder diary for at least 3 days to help inform clinicians of the symptoms and how this affects you, before deciding the next appropriate steps. People with disabilities or additional needs may need accompanying appointments, a home visit can also be offered. Importantly, a female practitioner can be requested by the patient.
A number of treatment options and management aids can be discussed in order to help women continue with daily life as normal, as much as possible. These are usually use for a short term, and in conjunction with other treatments such as pelvic floor training or bladder training.
